The middle of the engine is occupied by a moveable cylinder D with a piston x (figs. 3, 5. 7. 8). This moveable cylinder opens by its bases into the cylinder СС´ and fits so exactly to the lids of the great cylinder as to allow no loss of steam. The moveable cylinder is hollow, and connected with the axle by a strong plate E (figs. 3, 5. 6, 7) which allows no direct communication between the two cylinders C and C´ , and consequently no direct communication between the introduction tube and the escape. The movable cylinder has two openings yy ´ (figs. 3. 5, 7). One of these openings lets the steam rush into the great cylinder, the other lets the steam out of the engine into the escape tube. The openings уу ´ are separated by the piston x : one of them is above, and the other under the solid plate E which divides the inner space of the moveable cylinder in two halves. The two semi-cylinders ВВ ´ contain two shutters, indicated by sh. 1 and sh. 2 (figs. 3. 5, 8, 9, 10, 11); each shutter consisting of a semi-cylindric column, and of two circular bases ff ´. The bases of the shutters fit exactly to corresponding circular openings in the upper and lower lids of the immoveable cylinder A , and of the semi-cylinders В and B ´ The shutters turn, without allowing any loss of steam, on centers aa , adapted to any immoveable contrivance, which is not indicated in the plans, as being easily understood by every builder of engines. The shutters work alternately. In the figures 2, 3, 4, 5, they are shown in their different positions; sh . 1 being open to let the piston pass, sh . 2 being shut and adhering firmly to the moveable cylinder D . In the figure 4, the space indicated by s , s , s , s , is full of steam which passes by the opening y , acts by pressing against the shutter sh . 2, and pushing the piston x . The space marked with v , v , v , is the vacuum produced by the escape of steam through the opening y ´ which is not indicated in the figure, being under the solid plate E .

Происхождение В Римской империи ношение П. (кольца) было широко распространено среди представителей разных слоев общества. Значением наделялся не только сам факт ношения П., но и металл, из к-рого он был изготовлен, наличие или отсутствие на нем дополнительных украшений в виде камня и проч., ношение на левой или правой руке, на том или ином пальце, количество П. и т. д. (см., напр.: Plin. Sen. Natur. hist. XXXIII 1. 4). П. мог служить знаком личной доблести, статуса, знатности, богатства, свободного рождения и т. п. ( Herodian. Hist. III 8. 5; Tertull. De resurr. 57; Novell. Just. 78 (539 г.); Isid. Hisp. Etymol. XIX 32. 3; известны примеры использования П. в магических целях - Ios. Flav. Antiq. VIII 2. 5). П. было принято дарить в день бракосочетания ( Isid. Hisp. De eccl. offic. II 20. 8; см. в ст. Брак). Использовались также П.-печати (anulus signatorius). Климент Александрийский призывал христиан отказаться от ношения П. как украшения, оставив только его функцию печати; при этом языческую символику, по его мнению, следовало заменять христианской, используя образы рыбы, голубя, корабля, якоря и т. п. ( Clem. Alex. Paed. III 11. 57-59; см.: Finney. 1987). Первые свидетельства об использовании П. епископами относятся к IV в. Свт. Оптат Милевитский, перечисляя отличительные черты кафолической Церкви, упоминает после ключей ап. Петра некий П., которого нет у еретиков и к-рый связан с образом запечатанного источника из Песн 4. 12 ( Optat. Contr. Parmen. I 10. 3). Однако до VII в. епископский П. выполнял только функцию печати (см., напр.: Aug. Ep. 217. 59; Avit. Ep. 78//PL. 59. Col. 280= Idem. Ep. 87//MGH. SS. AA. Bd. 6/2.
