Part I—The Statesman The following article from  describes the service and times of  Petr Stolypin, Russia’s leading statesman in the period following the Revolution of 1905 and Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs from 1906 to 1911, when he died from an assassin " s bullet. His hapless murderer was but a tool in the hands of " the mystery of iniquity, " which doth already work (2 Thess. 2:7).   Stolypin, however, will be ever remembered as a dedicated public servant, with whom not all of his colleagues agreed, but who the people loved. He embodied that nobility of soul of which, perhaps, the present world is not worthy.

Cookie policy Message of the Primates of the Orthodox Churches (Phanar, March 6-9, 2014) On March 9, the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the message of the participants in the meeting of Primates and representatives of the Orthodox Churches was read out during the divine service at the Cathedral of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victory-Bearer in Phanar. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Through the grace of God, the Primates of the Most Holy Autocephalous Orthodox Churches, to the Orthodox faithful throughout the world, all of our Christian brothers and sisters as well as every person of goodwill: we extend God’s blessing and our greeting of love and peace. “We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thess. 1.2-3) 1. Having convened by the grace of our compassionate God, at the invitation of the Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, at the Phanar, from March 6-9, 2014; having deliberated in fraternal love on matters concerning our Holy Church today; and concelebrating in the Patriarchal Church of St. George on the glorious occasion of the Sunday of Orthodoxy, we address you with these words of love, peace and consolation. Inasmuch as our One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Orthodox Church dwells in the world, it also experiences the challenges of every age. Faithful to Holy Tradition, the Church of Christ is in constant dialogue with every period of time, suffering with human beings and sharing their anguish. For “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and to the ages” (Heb. 13.8). The trials and challenges of history are especially acute in our days, and Orthodox Christians cannot remain uninvolved or indifferent to them. This is why we have assembled “together in one place” (Acts 2.1) in order to reflect on the problems and temptations facing humanity today. “There is fighting without and fear within.” (2 Cor. 7.5) These Apostolic words are also valid for the Church today.

The Mystery of Iniquity Archpriest Andrew Phillips The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime. Sir Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary, August 1914 Noah’s Flood. I. Aivazovsky, 1864      On 15 May 1014 the filioque error was for the first time proclaimed in the seat of the Western Patriarchate in Rome, as it was ever after to be proclaimed. This act of spiritual impurity was due to the loss of the Holy Spirit. Forty years in 1054 this act was to condemn the Western world to spiritual captivity, a future outside the Church of Christ the God-man. This loss of spiritual freedom meant that the Faith had become a mere institutional religion. And, in due course, 900 years later, in 1914, Western Europe set out on its final act of suicide. And in 2014 the ever-aggressive and ever-covetous West yet again invaded the Russian Lands (the fifth time in just over 200 years), once more choosing the route via Kiev as in earlier times. Indeed, ever since 1914 the world has not known peace, nothing has been the same again. 1914 reminds us of Noah’s Flood, but this time it has not been a Flood of Water, but a Flood of Iniquity. The world has indeed been turned upside down, all has become abnormal in an ever-increasing spiral of violence and death. What was normal and natural is now abnormal and unnatural, what was abnormal and unnatural is now normal and natural. What happened? Why has there been no peace ever since? Why has evil spread without ceasing? Why have the flood waters not receded? Why has the dove that has gone forth from the Ark found no resting-place? The waters of the Flood have not gone back because in 1918 the last true Christian Emperor, he who restrained iniquity, was finally removed, like a lamb to the slaughter. The Emperor, or Tsar, of by far the world’s largest country was murdered by evil men on the orders of evil men. Already, nearly two centuries ago, one of Russia’s enemies had written that: ‘No revolution in Europe or anywhere in the world can altogether attain its aims as long as the present Russian State exists’ 1 . Thus was fulfilled the prophecy: ‘For the mystery of iniquity is already at work; only he who now restrains it will do so until he is removed (2 Thess 2, 7).

How Should We Build Our Prayer Rule? It is impossible to imagine a meaningful Christian life without a daily prayer rule. But what should this prayer rule be? How long or short, and consisting of which prayers? How can we prevent our daily prayer rule from becoming purely a formality? What should we pay particular attention to, and what mistakes should we avoid? And what is the most important thing in a prayer rule?           The rule is for man, and not the other way around Archpriest Andrei Ovchinikov: —There are three important components to a prayer rule: proper measure, consistency, and quality. 1. Proper measure. The proper measure adorns a person in any work—both earthly and spiritual. It is very important to find the middle, royal path. This is a surety of success. This law is important and relevant in our prayer rule. We have to force ourselves in prayer on the one hand, but refrain from zeal not according to reason on the other. We mustn’t be lazy, but it is also dangerous to overdo it. In my view, it is better not to complete something in a prayer rule, and leave the desire to pray for another day. Overdoing it more often than not causes aversion and inner protest. The fathers say that the small rule is without price. Obviously there is need of a spiritual guide here, who is experienced and discerning in the practical work of prayer. But this advice presupposes a measure of freedom and personal choice on the part of the inquirer. Do not take on a long rule. Let it be something that you could do all your life. Remember: The rule is for man, and not the other way around. The proper measure found keeps a person in good spiritual shape, but also preserves joy in the heart and the desire for prayer. Take many factors into consideration: age, health, marital status, workload, and so on. The fruit of correct prayer labor is deep humility and inner peace. 2. Consistency. Be consistent in prayer. This is what the apostle Paul tells us to do. Success in any work depends upon our zeal and consistency—but not only on this. To be sure, the rolling stone gathers no moss. But we also have to remember that we are only God’s co-workers. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase (1 Cor. 3:7). It is essential that God bless our labors. The holy fathers talk about synergy —about our consistent labor in prayer and grace-filled help from on high. This is the pledge of our success. There can be no pauses in the labor of prayer. The labor of prayer reminds us of riding a bicycle or rowing upstream—only unremitting effort and work ensure our forward movement. The same laws are at work in prayer: Pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17). For the sake of our constancy in the work of prayer, dryness of heart and emotional boredom will with time give place to a robust spirit and the desire for prayer. This is a sign of progress and grace-filled help from above.

On the Cult of Health, and Bodily Illness Archpriest Oleg Stenyayev How are the soul and body connected? Do we need to be concerned about physical health? Why is care for physical health senseless without care for the soul? What danger is there in the cult of health? Archpriest Oleg Stenyayev answers these questions.      Unfortunately, these days there is a certain cult of human health . We are not even talking about the healing of diseases, but about the endless preventative treatments of all possible illnesses. A powerful industry offers at a range of prices to keep us out of danger from the point of view of physical health. This is becoming a veritable mania: People are ready at any cost, even at the cost of compromising their own Christian convictions, to attain physical well-being and health. But the paradox in this situation consists in the fact that no matter how a person tries to keep his body healthy, no matter how he worries about his body, we know that it will definitely die, mix with the earth and return to its state of pre-existence and dust, from which God created the first man, as it is written in the Scriptures: And the Lord created man from the dust of the earth (Gen. 2:7). In this life we cannot preserve our bodies, we cannot heal them of all possible diseases; they are doomed. And the Holy Scriptures show us that the day of salvation of our bodies is when they will be resurrected and clothed in incorruption. Then on what should we spend more time in this earthly life? Salvation of the soul . Because if we do not save our souls in this earthly life, we will never save them. And here is a true paradox: We take less care for the soul, which is what really needs to be saved in this life, and worry more about our bodies, which we know for sure will perish and die. In this life, the soul supports the body’s existence. If the soul leaves the body, then the body dies, decomposes, rots. In the future life it will be just the opposite: When the soul leaves the body, the soul no longer has the fullness of existence—neither the fullness of suffering nor the fullness of blessedness. It abides as if on the threshold of blessedness or the threshold of suffering. But when our bodies are resurrected in the day of the body’s salvation, and our souls return to our bodies, then the body will communicate the fullness of being to the soul. And in the Scriptures, in the epistle of the apostle Paul to the Thessalonians it is written, I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thess. 5:23). That is just how it is—preserve in purity of spirit, soul, and body in all the fullness of human existence.

We are used to drawing a clear dividing line between monasticism and family life, but there is no fundamental difference between them, because they are one and the same path—the path to God. Sts. Peter and Fevronia      It is often said today that today’s Christianity greatly differs from the Christianity of the past, because the world has fundamentally changed and modern civilization leaves a powerful imprint on the life of the Church. Therefore, the conditions of salvation are a little different for us now than those that the holy fathers have taught and teach. In my view, such a judgment is profoundly mistaken, for the world changes only in external, and I must say, irrelevant ways, paradoxical as it may sound, inasmuch as the substance of human life after the Fall remains as before. The Christianity of previous centuries and of our modern times differs in no way. The tasks of a Christian in the work of salvation remain the same: to fulfill the commandments of the Lord, to pray, to fast, to participate in the Divine services, to do good deeds. It all leads to the acquisition of the spirit of peace, of which the venerable elder Seraphim spoke in his day. The main thing has not changed over the course of Christian history—to try to avoid the two major sins: judgment ( Judge not, that ye be not judged , Mt. 7:1), and ingratitude ( Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you , 1 Thess. 5:16-18). If there is gratitude in your heart, if you judge no one, then the “spirit of peace” gradually enters into your soul. Condemnation also recedes when a man loves all of mankind not abstractly , but loves every individual person, and through this love learns to love the whole world, of which every person is a part. The apostle John the Theologian has some remarkable words: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him (1 Jn. 2:15). Does this mean it’s not necessary to love God’s creation? No, on the contrary, it’s necessary to love it, necessary to admire it, and rejoice in it. But in the verse “the world” refers to sin which deforms the beauty of the created world and ruins it. Then, of course, we must renounce this sin and the life in sin. After all, the true content of worldly life is not in hanging out in clubs and cafes—in activities that ravage the soul… Chores, childbearing, child-rearing, work—this is what worldly life implies, in this consists its true goal. And it’s not only possible—it’s necessary to love! And to thank God for everything that He gives us.

“Scientists discovered the fresco fragments during excavations,” first in 1956, then in the 1990s during restoration of the cathedral she explained. The “Mother of God Enthroned” icon, presumably dating to 1466, depicts the Mother of God seated on a throne with the Christ Child, flanked by the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The museum director clarified that the fresco will be returned to a pillar in the cathedral in 2017, in coordination with the Russian Ministry of Culture and with the blessing of Metropolitan Lev of Novgorod and Staraya Russa. “The image is very beautiful and expressive, painted with the traditional colors of that time: the Mother of God in a blue coif and tunic of the same color with white trimming, and a bright blue background. The archangels in ochre, here characterized by fine detail, right down to the fingernails,” stated artist-restorer Tatiana Romashkevich. The fresco, 5 ft. 7 in. x 3 ft. 2 in., will be placed in its historical place, in the southern half of St. Sophia’s Cathedral. 16 января 2017 г. Pay attention to how the merciful Lord relates to those to whom He has entrusted His vineyard. The Lord gives to His workers and leaves them alone. He doesn’t stand over them like some taskmaster. He entrusts then with that work which they are called to realize on earth. And we see also with what unfathomable patience again and again, despite all of our terrible sins and crimes, the Lord grants the possibility to respond to His trust and love. However, it doesn’t mean that the righteous judgment of God does not exist. All ends with the Lord, as we heard, bestowing death upon the evil laborers, taking the vineyard from them and handing it over to others. Since the time of the coming of Christ a new vineyard of God has been spreading throughout the whole earth. The entire human race is included in this vineyard, and this new vineyard is the Church of Christ with the apostles, martyrs, hierarchs, confessors, preachers, right-believing kings and queens—those who worthily labor in the Lord’s vineyard. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people , as the word of God tells us (1 Pet. 2:9). As the beautiful fruit of the salvific sowing, so the good husbandmen bring to the Lord their labor, and will do so until the end of the age. However, the Lord’s parable is about evil husbandmen, and it concerns not only the Old Testament, but our whole Church is the Lord’s vineyard. Every human soul, say the Holy Fathers, is typified by the vineyard. And just as the owner of the vineyard in the parable received not even one handful of grapes, so does the Lord often receive no spiritual fruit from his many children, whom He loves. What sort of devastation has passed through our world in recent years? The devil himself has withered nearly the entire vineyard. And the Lord warns that it will be yet bitterer. The Son of Man, He says, is coming, and will He find at least one grape on earth? Who will be guilty more than all in this? We know that ruler of this world increasingly asserts his power in this world, knowing that he has little time remaining, ever more raging, ever more asserting his domination—“ the mystery of iniquity ” of which the Apostle Paul speaks in his epistle to the Thessalonians (2 Thess. 2:7). But this mystery acts not only in the external world, say the Holy Fathers, but it touches upon the very Church, because in the very end the man of lawlessness, as the apostle says, will come into the church of God, and sitting down, make himself to be God (2 Thess. 2:4).
