Saint George was the patron saint and protector of several of the great builders of the Russian state. Saint Vladimir’s son, Yaroslav the Wise (in holy Baptism George), advanced the veneration of the saint in the Russian Church. He built the city of Yuriev [i.e., “of Yurii.” “Yurii” is the diminutive of “George”, as “Ivan” is of “John”], he also founded the Yuriev monastery at Novgorod, and he built a church of Saint George the Victory Bearer at Kiev. The day of the consecration of Saint George’s Church in Kiev, November 26, 1051 by Saint Hilarion, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus, has entered into the liturgical treasury of the Church as a special church feastday. Yuriev Day is beloved by the Russian people as an “autumn Feast of Saint George.” The name of Saint George was also borne by the founder of Moscow, Yurii Dolgoruky (+ 1157), who was the builder of many churches dedicated to Saint George, and the builder of the city of Yuriev-Polsk. In the year 1238 the heroic fight of the Russian nation against the Mongol Horde was led by the Great Prince Yurii (George) Vsevolodovich of Vladimir (February 4), who fell at the Battle at the Sita River. His memory, like that of Igor the Brave, and defender of his land, was celebrated in Russian spiritual poems and ballads. The first Great Prince of Moscow, when Moscow had become the center of the Russian Land, was Yurii Danilovich (+ 1325), the son of Saint Daniel of Moscow, and grandson of Saint Alexander Nevsky. From that time Saint George the Victory Bearer, depicted as a horseman slaying the serpent, appeared on Moscow’s coat of arms, and became an emblem of the Russian state. This has strengthened Russia’s connections with Christian nations, and especially with Iberia (Georgia, the Land of Saint George). The Orthodox Church in America 6 мая 2017 г. Michael Zheltov (Moscow) Saint Nicholas of Myra in the Byzantine Hymnography In his article the author presents an overview of the entire corpus of Byzantine multistrophic ecclesiastical hymns – canons and kontakia – dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Without any doubt, for the Byzantine hymnographers Nicholas of Myra was a very important person – they wrote more hymnographic canons in his honour than in honour of any other certain saint. One can count 55 canons of Byzantine authors in honour of Saint Nicholas – not taking into account the canons, where Saint Nicholas is mentioned along with the other saints and the mixed canons from some Parakletika, where Saint Nicholas has just a troparion in each ode. Many of these 55 canons are still unedited. It is worth noting that there are three so-called garlands of canons, i. e. sets consisting of 8 canons each – one for each of the 8 musical tones (and only one of these garlands has been published, the editions of two others are in preparation, one of them – by the author of this paper). The author analyzes the texts of the canons already edited, as well as all the accessible information about the unedited. He begins with the 9 canons (a garland plus an additional canon) by Saint Joseph the Hymnographer, showing that their traditional attribution is correct indeed (the same cannot be said about a canon recently published by V. Vasilik, which was falsely attributed to Saint Joseph by the editor) and drawing the parallels between these canons and the Constantinopolitan hagiographic tradition concerning Saint Nicholas in the times of Saint Joseph (about 816 – about 886).

2002). Tassin R.-P. Histoire littéraire de la congrégation de Saint-Maur. We do not know when Saint Barsanuphius arrived at the monastery of Abba Seridus, nor anything about the home and family of Saint John the Prophet. Following the instructions of Saint Barsanuphius, John attained the heights of perfection, and became like his teacher in all things. Out of humility, he sent those who came to him with questions to Abba Barsanuphius. Saint John foresaw and predicted many things, even his own death a week after the death of Abba Seridus. Abba Elian, the young igumen of this monastery, begged John to remain with him for two more weeks, in order to teach him the Rule and how to govern the monastery. Saint John fulfilled his request and died after two weeks. Saint Barsanuphius the Great survived his disciple and friend, but embraced complete silence and refused to give answers to anyone. These two ascetics have left the soul-profiting book, GUIDANCE TOWARD SPIRITUAL LIFE: ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS OF DISCIPLES by the Holy Monastic Fathers Barsanuphius and John as their spiritual legacy. This book was known to many saints who lived at a later time, as evidenced by the wrings of Saint Theodore the Studite (November 11 and January 26), the hieromonk Nikon Chernogorets (+ 1060), Saint Simeon the New Theologian (March 12), and other Orthodox ascetics and writers. Troparion — Tone 1 Mystical tongues of the Holy Spirit/Rational harps of grace/Sounding forth sweet hymns of discernment/Which soothe and rejoice men’s souls,/You moved them to cast off the yoke of passion/And to trample on Satan’s head./Therefore, God-like Barsanuphius and wise John,/Deliver those who sing to you:/Glory to Him who has given you grace:/Glory to Him who has blessed you/Glory to Him who has saved many through your holy words of counsel!
